M      is extreme! We thrive on

E     adrenaline rushes, highs,

danger, and riding on the edge. We do anything possible to escape the boredom of life. We want extremes.

The first of the extremes we want are the things that we see:

Extreme appearance, such as the latest clothes, hair, and sexy body shape. Extreme mobility, the latest set of wheels including skateboards, scooters, wheelies, bicycles, 4-wheelers, and cars.

teen girl with cell phone Extreme communications, hot computers, cells, games, iPods, and high-def electronics.

Finally, extreme money and possessions, the best deals, the highest pay with the least work, and sometimes even shoplifting or grand theft.

The second set of extremes we want are the things that we feel:

Extreme food, for instance. Who doesn’t want the biggest pizza, the thickest steak, the hottest BBQ, and those high-energy drinks? Along with obesity, anorexia and bulimia are food extremes too.

Next, sex - extreme satisfaction.

Almost everyone is seeking some fun. The hype is even more extreme if we can do it without our parents knowing it. This includes things like pornography,

and homosexuality. If we get caught expecting an unwanted baby, there is also the extreme choice - abortion.

Now let’s explore strong emotions - extreme feelings. Everyone longs for love, joy, peace, and security; but many of us feel fear, guilt, anger, or hatred instead. Some even get kicks out of violence, like shootings or bombs.

Some of us just crave sensations - extreme stimulation. We seek these in the chemical highs of drugs, Inhalants, alcohol, or our parents’ prescriptions. We also use amusement park rides, violent movies, meditation, hypnotism, dares, high speeds, loud music, and strobing lights to produce out-of-control sensations too.

The third bunch of extremes are those things that we use to build our self-esteem or pride. Pride is arrogant, boastful, rude, defiant, disobedient, and “in-your-face”. Improper self-esteem produces five attitudes: We have to be the best. “I am better than anyone else.” We desire to be the most popular, famous, or glamorous. “I will draw more attention to myself than to anyone else.” We think we are good enough to make our own choices. “I can do anything I want.” We are self-centered.

“I am more important than anyone else.” Finally, we crave power by making things go our own way or by manipulating other people. “I can control anyone else.” The problem is that these are the wrong extremes to want. The craving for the things you see, feel, or seek to build up yourself will destroy you. Some of you may have already self-destructed and are now trying to fix things.

Rehabs, counseling, medicines, relationships, good works, religion, church, rituals, praying, the occult, or Satan worship are only band-aids for the real problem.

The bad news is that you can‘t help yourself. You need Someone to

rescue you because there are many extreme consequences for the things that you do like debt, detention, jail, obesity, anorexia, STD’s, HIV, pregnancies, addictions, self-destructive behavior, mental illness, accidents, and death.

The good news is that the answer is as easy as ABC. Admit that you desire or do the wrong things. The Bible says that “All have sinned,” (Rom. 3:23) - an extreme amount of sin and sinners and it includes you. God is holy. He has never sinned - extreme perfection! This is why He must judge sin. “For the wages of sin is death,” - eternity in a real hell, hell Rom. 6:23) - extreme punishment!

But God is also love. He came to this earth as a baby. He grew up and died on a horrible cross. “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,“ (Rom 5:8). He suffered in hell in your place - extreme love! He was buried, but 3 days later He came out of the tomb alive, (Matt. 28:5-6) - extreme power!

Believe these things and trust Jesus to take away your sin. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved,” (Acts 16:31). He will take you to heaven forever - extreme time! Heaven is a place of gold, crystal, gems, and angels - extreme beauty! (Rev, 4)

The best part is an awesome, extreme God! Confess your sin to God, declare your faith in Jesus (His death, burial, and resurrection), and simply ask Him to forgive you. young lady praying Then He will take away your sin and eternal punishment (Rom. 19:9,10, 13) - extreme forgiveness!

Our world is indeed full of extremes. Most are harmful. Have you been seeking these earthly extremes? God’s world is full of extremes too, but His are good for you. He doesn’t want any person to perish eternally, (I Pet. 3: 9). Take time today to think about which extremes you really want.
